Our volunteers, members, employees and partners work together with communities, educational institutions, government agencies, businesses and the broader aquatic industry, to Save lives and empower communities to safely enjoy water.   

Commis Chef
We’re excited to offer a full-time, ongoing opportunity for a Commis Chef to join our team at The Views. Based at our Port Melbourne site, you will play a key role in supporting kitchen operations, preparing high‑quality meals, and ensuring an exceptional experience for café patrons and event guests. 

As a Commis Chef, you will contribute to the preparation, cooking and presentation of meals for functions, events and café service, while upholding high standards of quality, safety and cleanliness. Working closely with our Venue Manager and the kitchen team, you will help deliver a welcoming and professional service that aligns with our values and commitment to community. 

About the role
In this role, you will: 

  • Prepare and cook meals to recipe and presentation standards, ensuring quality, freshness, food safety and mis en place to support smooth service
  • Manage your kitchen section, maintaining organisation, cleanliness and compliance with food safety requirements while working autonomously and taking ownership
  • Monitor stock, report issues and follow portion control guidelines to ensure consistency across all services 
  • Support junior staff through guidance, skill development and positive role modelling 
  • Work collaboratively with kitchen and front‑of‑house teams to deliver smooth service and customer satisfaction 
  • Maintain a clean, safe and hygienic workspace, following OH&S and food safety standards 
  • Support broader café and function operations as required, contributing to a cohesive and efficient team 

About you 
You will bring enthusiasm for great food, teamwork and service excellence. You are someone who thrives in a fast‑paced environment and enjoys contributing to a strong kitchen culture. You will have: 

  • Previous experience in a similar kitchen or food service role in a commercial kitchen (cafe, hotel, restaurant or catering environment) with sound knowledge of food preparation and safety practices 
  • Formal qualifications such as Certificate III in Commercial Cookery with completion of a cookery apprenticeship  
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high‑quality dishes 
  • Ability to follow instructions, work as part of a team and stay organised under pressure 
  • A friendly and professional approach, with strong communication and customer‑focused service skills 
  • Basic food handling certificate and food safety supervisor certification (or willingness to obtain)
  • Working with Children Check (or willingness to obtain)
